US National Debt on Trajectory Toward $41 Trillion Limit

US National Debt Ceiling 2026

The United States national debt has reached $39 trillion as of May 2026, keeping the federal government on a steady path toward its statutory borrowing limit of $41.1 trillion. Following the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” in 2025, which raised the ceiling by $5 trillion, the current limit is expected to provide a buffer for the near term. However, economic forecasters and policy centers project that the nation will likely reach this $41.1 trillion threshold between late winter and mid-summer of 2027.

The steady growth of the national debt is driven by consistent structural budget deficits, which are projected to reach $1.9 trillion for fiscal year 2026. Rising net interest costs remain a primary factor in these annual deficits, contributing to a total public debt level that now exceeds 100 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product. When the Treasury Department eventually nears the $41.1 trillion limit, it will be required to implement “extraordinary measures” to manage federal obligations and avoid a potential default until Congress takes further action to raise or suspend the debt ceiling.
