U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces launched a series of retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian military targets on June 26, 2026, in response to an Iranian drone attack on a commercial vessel. The U.S. military targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites, following an incident on June 25 in which an Iranian one-way attack drone struck the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely as it exited the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast.
President Donald Trump characterized the Iranian drone strike as a “foolish violation” of the standing ceasefire agreement. According to official reports, Iranian forces launched at least four drones during the attack; U.S. forces successfully intercepted and downed three of them, though one drone managed to strike and damage the M/V Ever Lovely. CENTCOM stated that the aggression clearly undermined freedom of navigation in the vital international trade corridor and violated the terms of the recent ceasefire agreement.
The strikes represent a significant escalation in tensions, testing the tenuous 60-day ceasefire memorandum signed by the U.S. and Iran on June 17, 2026. While the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have thwarted the U.S. operation, they also warned of a potential “swift and decisive” retaliation. As of now, U.S. forces remain in the region to coordinate safe passage for commercial vessels, while international maritime agencies have paused evacuations from the Persian Gulf due to the ongoing security threat.
