Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Announced, Original KOTOR Director Returns
The long-awaited return to the beloved Old Republic era of the Star Wars galaxy was officially confirmed on Thursday evening with the shocking reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards 2025. The announcement was accompanied by a stunning cinematic teaser trailer and an exclusive interview with the project’s director, Casey Hudson, whose involvement immediately positions the new game as the spiritual successor to the legendary Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR).
The game is being developed by Hudson’s newly formed Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The official description and the cinematic trailer, which was captured in Unreal Engine 5, reveal a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG where players step into the role of a Force user at the very end of the Old Republic era. The footage showcased a protagonist with two companions, including a combat-ready droid, landing on a desolate planet and igniting a blue lightsaber to confront an unseen enemy.
In the exclusive interview, Hudson, who directed the original KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy, confirmed that the game will feature an all-new story with new characters and is not a direct sequel to the previous KOTOR games. He emphasized that the core of the experience remains player agency: “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since—crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark.” Douglas Reilly, Vice President and General Manager of Lucasfilm Games, echoed this sentiment, stating the Old Republic era is “a rich and beloved part of the Star Wars galaxy, and we are thrilled to be exploring a fresh story that we’ve never seen before.” The game is confirmed to be in early development for PC and consoles, with no release window provided, suggesting fans will have a significant wait before they can embark on this next chapter.
