WHY! Tom Cruise Punched Jack Nicholson On Set Of A Few Good Men
Actor and comedian Kevin Pollak revealed a hilarious behind-the-scenes moment from the 1992 courtroom drama A Few Good Men, explaining why Tom Cruise playful punched co-star Jack Nicholson on set. Speaking on the Still Here Hollywood podcast with host Steve Kmetko, Pollak recounted the climax of the film—where Cruise’s character, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, aggressively interrogates Nicholson’s character, Col. Nathan Jessup, culminating in the iconic “You can’t handle the truth!” exchange. During the sequence, the camera was positioned right next to Nicholson’s face to capture his point of view of Cruise delivering intense, high-stakes dialogue.
Instead of maintaining a serious demeanor off-camera, Nicholson decided to test his young co-star’s focus. According to Pollak, while Cruise marched toward the camera in character, Nicholson began making “the most ridiculous clown face you’ve ever seen” just inches outside the camera’s frame. Despite the off-screen distraction, Cruise stayed in character, finished delivering his lines without breaking composure, and immediately punched Nicholson in the shoulder as soon as director Rob Reiner called cut. Both actors burst into laughter following the playful gesture, sharing a lighthearted moment amid one of the most intense legal drama scenes in cinema history.
The story highlights the lighthearted atmosphere fostered by director Rob Reiner on set despite the heavy dramatic material of the Aaron Sorkin-penned film. A Few Good Men went on to become a major box office success and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Nicholson. According to an official news report published by HOLA!, the playful interaction between Cruise and Nicholson remains one of Pollak’s favorite memories from filming the classic movie.
