Canada Designates Indias Bishnoi Gang as Terrorist Organization
Canada has officially designated the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity. The move was announced by Canada’s Public Safety Minister, who stated the decision is intended to provide law enforcement with stronger legal tools to combat the gang’s activities.
The Bishnoi gang, under its jailed leader Lawrence Bishnoi, is accused of orchestrating murder, shootings, and arson to intimidate and extort diaspora communities in Canada. Authorities have linked the gang to high-profile killings, including that of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
With its new status, Canadian officials now have the power to freeze or seize any assets linked to the gang, pursue terrorist-related charges such as financing, recruitment and facilitation of violence, and expand surveillance and judicial reach.
The designation has drawn mixed responses. Supporters among South Asian diaspora groups welcomed the move as a necessary step to ensure community safety. Critics warn of possible diplomatic fallout, given India’s objections to allegations of agent involvement and Canada’s earlier accusations regarding transnational operations.
