HOUSTON — The Orion spacecraft carrying the four-person Artemis II crew officially entered the lunar sphere of influence early Monday morning, April 6, 2026. This transition occurred at approximately 12:37 a.m. EDT when the capsule was roughly 39,000 miles from the lunar surface. Entering this region means the Moon’s gravitational pull is now stronger on the vehicle than the gravity of Earth.

The crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are now prepared for their closest approach to the Moon later today. According to reporting from NASA, the spacecraft is performing flawlessly as it moves toward a historic trajectory that will take humans farther into deep space than ever before.

​Later this afternoon, the mission is expected to reach another major milestone by breaking a long-standing spaceflight record. At approximately 1:46 p.m. ET, the Orion capsule will surpass the distance record set by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970, which reached 248,655 statute miles from Earth.

The Artemis II flight path is designed to reach a maximum distance of 252,760 statute miles from our home planet. As detailed by the Guardian, this achievement marks a significant step forward in the return of human exploration to the lunar vicinity. The crew has spent the morning conducting final system checks and preparing their high-resolution cameras to document the lunar surface during the upcoming flyby window.

​The mission’s closest approach is scheduled for 7:02 p.m. ET, during which Orion will zoom approximately 4,000 miles above the gray lunar terrain. During this six-hour observation period, the astronauts will analyze thirty specific scientific targets including the Orientale Basin and potential future landing sites. A critical phase of the flyby involves a forty-minute communication blackout starting around 6:44 p.m. ET as the spacecraft passes behind the far side of the Moon.

According to updates from Space.com, this “Earthset” moment will be followed by a spectacular “Earthrise” as the capsule emerges on the other side. This slingshot maneuver is essential for setting the spacecraft on its return trajectory toward Earth without the need for additional heavy engine burns.

​Following the completion of the lunar flyby, the Orion capsule will begin its four-day journey back across the celestial void. Mission controllers in Houston will monitor the vehicle’s thermal protection systems and life support as it prepares for the high-speed reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. If all systems remain nominal, the crew is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on Friday, April 10, 2026.

According to reports from the Canadian Space Agency, the data gathered during this ten-day mission will be vital for the upcoming Artemis III mission, which aims to land the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. The successful entry into lunar space today signals the start of the most intense and scientifically productive phase of the entire Artemis II journey.
