A widening rift between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is threatening to overshadow the Peoples Democratic Party’s upcoming National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan. The relocation of the event from Kano to Ibadan—Makinde’s stronghold—has intensified speculation about power play and internal maneuvering within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party insiders revealed that Wike’s loyalists are displeased with the venue change, seeing it as a move designed to strengthen Makinde’s influence in the party hierarchy. The tension has sparked concerns over unity as the PDP prepares for a decisive convention that will shape its direction towards 2027.
However, some senior figures within the party have dismissed claims of division, describing the reports as exaggerated. They insist that preparations for the convention are progressing smoothly, with decisions on the venue and other logistics reportedly endorsed by key stakeholders.
