Kano Man Opens Fire at Neighbour’s Wedding Over Loud Music, Kills One and Injures Four
A wedding celebration in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano metropolis, reportedly turned tragic after a 34-year-old man allegedly opened fire at his neighbour’s wedding ceremony over loud music, killing one guest and injuring four others.
The suspect, identified as Rabiu Mukthar, reportedly became angry after the music from the wedding celebration allegedly prevented him from sleeping. Witnesses said the incident happened late in the evening when guests and residents were gathered for the ceremony.
According to eyewitnesses, the joyful atmosphere suddenly turned into panic after sporadic gunshots were heard. The bride, groom, their families and guests reportedly fled the scene as residents scrambled to find safety.
The Kano State Police Command said Mukthar allegedly emerged from his residence carrying a pump-action firearm and fired repeatedly into the gathering. Police officers responded after receiving a distress call and arrested the suspect along with another individual. The firearm allegedly used in the attack was also recovered.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said one person died in the attack, while four others sustained gunshot injuries. The deceased was reportedly deposited for burial, while the injured victims were taken to hospital for treatment.
During interrogation, Mukthar allegedly told investigators that he was angered by the loud music. He reportedly complained that the wedding organisers had not consulted neighbours before playing the music and that the noise had prevented him from sleeping.
The principal suspect and his alleged accomplice have been taken into police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of disputes over noise and the need for residents to resolve disagreements peacefully rather than resorting to violence.
The suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
