Police Arrest 23-Year-Old Suspected Transformer Vandal After Severe Electrocution in Enugu
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man after he was severely burnt while allegedly attempting to vandalise an electricity transformer in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of the state.
The incident happened on August 17, 2026, along Ogbaike Road in Obollo-Afor. Residents reportedly discovered the suspect trapped inside the transformer enclosure and suffering from severe burns before alerting the police.
The police identified the suspect as Nnaji Chidiebere. Officers attached to the Udenu Division responded to the community’s alert and found him unconscious at the scene.
The suspect was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility, where medical personnel reportedly resuscitated him. He was later transferred to a specialist hospital for further treatment due to the seriousness of his injuries.
According to the police, Chidiebere later regained consciousness and claimed that he acted alone during the alleged operation. However, preliminary investigations reportedly linked him to ongoing transformer vandalism in the area.
The police said detectives are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and establish whether other people were involved. Authorities also said the investigation will help them prepare the case for prosecution.
The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended residents of Obollo-Afor for their vigilance and quick response. He urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities around electricity installations and other critical infrastructure.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with vandalising electricity infrastructure. Apart from the financial losses caused by damage to transformers and other equipment, such activities can also result in serious injuries or death.
The suspect remains under investigation, and the allegations against him have not yet been determined by a court.
