The United States government has announced a new requirement for Nigerian citizens applying for U.S. visas. Applicants must now provide all social media usernames or handles used over the past five years on the DS-160 visa application form.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria explained that applicants must certify the accuracy and completeness of the information provided. Failure to disclose social media details may lead to visa denial and could also affect eligibility for future applications.
This policy is part of broader U.S. efforts to strengthen security checks through digital footprints, a measure that has been gradually implemented since 2019. Consular officers will be able to review public posts, affiliations, and online activities as part of their assessment process.
