Consumer watchdog urges retailers to maintain fair pricing and quality standards
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning to businesses across Nigeria. The commission stated it will crack down on unjustified price increases and the sale of substandard goods ahead of high-demand periods.
Rising Costs and Fight Against Excessive Pricing
The FCCPC cautions that inflating prices without justification will attract fines. Retailers pricing items like food, household goods, and fuel above regulated rates risk enforcement action. The commission emphasized the importance of fair pricing in protecting low-income consumers.
Crackdown on Quality Deficits
The agency also flagged concerns over the influx of counterfeit and poorly made products. FCCPC announced plans to enhance inspections at ports and markets, adding stricter checks to verify product quality and authenticity. Offenders may face seizure of goods and administrative penalties.
Penalties for Violators in a Unified Response
FCCPC confirmed it will partner with relevant agencies—including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)—to take action. Violations could result in fines, product recall orders, or public naming and shaming of non-compliant companies.
Consumer Awareness Campaign Underway
The commission has launched a nationwide awareness campaign. It educates consumers on how to identify fake products and report price gouging. A new toll-free hotline for complaints has also been introduced to ensure swift redress and monitoring.
