Trump Orders New Fatal Strike on Alleged Drug Smuggling Vessel in International Waters
President Donald Trump has announced that U.S. military forces carried out another lethal strike on a vessel suspected of carrying illicit narcotics. The operation, which took place in international waters under the U.S. Southern Command’s jurisdiction, resulted in the deaths of three individuals on board. Trump claims the target was tied to a designated terrorist organization involved in trafficking drugs toward the United States.
The president released aerial footage showing the vessel speeding through the water before being struck, followed by a fiery explosion. He stated that intelligence confirmed it was moving along a known narcotrafficking route and the people aboard were “narcoterrorists.” Trump emphasized that no U.S. forces were harmed during the strike.
This marks at least the third such operation this month in which vessels allegedly linked to drug-smuggling have been targeted. Previous strikes include one that killed 11 individuals aboard a boat from Venezuela and another more recent operation that also resulted in multiple deaths.
Legal experts, human rights organizations, and some lawmakers have raised concerns about the legality and transparency of these strikes. Questions focus on whether due process was followed, the justification for using military force in international waters, and whether such actions conform with international law.
The administration, however, views these operations as part of a broader campaign to curb illegal drug flows into the U.S. and to confront transnational narcotics networks deemed dangerous to national security.
