US Backs Extended UN Peacekeeping Mandate in Lebanon

The United States has confirmed its support for extending the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, according to the US envoy. The mission, led by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), plays a critical role in maintaining stability along the country’s southern border amid heightened regional tensions.

The US envoy stressed that Washington views the extension as essential to preventing further escalation between Lebanon and Israel. The peacekeeping force has been stationed in the region for decades, tasked with monitoring ceasefires, supporting humanitarian access, and helping reduce the risk of conflict.

Amid ongoing instability in the Middle East, the United States has urged all parties to respect international agreements and avoid actions that could destabilize the area. The envoy noted that renewing UNIFIL’s mandate will ensure continued international oversight and strengthen Lebanon’s security environment.

The decision comes as the UN Security Council prepares to vote on the extension in the coming days. Analysts believe US backing will play a decisive role in securing consensus among council members.
