Trump Expects Substantial Results from High-Stakes Beijing Summit

Trump Xi Jinping China summit May 2026

President Donald Trump announced on Monday, May 11, 2026, that he expects to get “a lot” out of his upcoming state visit to Beijing for a high-stakes summit with President Xi Jinping. Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, the president emphasized his “great relationship” with his Chinese counterpart while outlining a demanding agenda for the two-day meeting scheduled for May 14–15.

This visit marks the first time a U.S. president has traveled to the Chinese capital since 2017, following a significant delay from its original March date due to the escalation of the Iran war. Trump signaled that he intends to use the face-to-face meeting to secure tangible economic and security concessions, particularly regarding the ongoing maritime blockade in the Middle East that has disrupted global energy markets.

The central focus of the discussions will be China‘s role in pressuring Tehran to accept a final peace framework. President Trump reiterated on Monday that the latest peace proposal from Iran was “totally unacceptable” because it lacked a permanent guarantee against nuclear weaponization.

He suggested that Beijing should leverage its position as a primary buyer of Iranian crude to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the current blockade is detrimental to China’s own energy security. U.S. officials expect the president to push for a more formal commitment from Xi to stop providing a financial lifeline to the Iranian government while the conflict remains active.

On the economic front, the summit is expected to produce a new “Board of Trade” intended to institutionalize commercial relations and manage persistent trade imbalances between the two superpowers. The Trump administration is seeking significant Chinese commitments for the purchase of American agricultural products and aerospace equipment, including a potential multi-billion dollar deal for Boeing aircraft.

White House economic advisers have expressed optimism that the visit will yield “good news for American workers” despite the broader geopolitical tensions. While the U.S. Department of the Treasury has called for increased diplomatic cooperation, the administration remains prepared to maintain its rigid tariff posture if the summit does not result in a substantive breakthrough on market access and regional security.
