Scarlett Johansson Stands by Woody Allen, Says Impact on Career is ‘Hard to Know’
Prominent Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has publicly addressed the persistent controversy surrounding her continued support for filmmaker Woody Allen, acknowledging that while she remains unsure of the professional cost, she believes in the importance of maintaining personal integrity. In a new interview published on Sunday, the star, who collaborated with Allen on three films, including Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, reaffirmed her conviction that the director is innocent of the decades-old sexual abuse allegations made by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow.
When directly questioned about whether her support for Allen, who has been largely ostracized by the film industry since the resurgence of the #MeToo movement, has resulted in a loss of work or damaged personal relationships, Johansson stated, “I guess it’s hard to know.” She elaborated on her position, saying, “You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in.” Johansson’s stance is notable as many of Allen’s former collaborators have either publicly voiced regret over working with him or vowed never to do so again.
Johansson has previously defended her close friendship with the director, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 that she loved Allen, believed his denials, and would “work with him anytime.” In her recent comments, she also offered a reflection on navigating public life, adding that as she has matured, she has also understood the importance of knowing “when it’s not your turn” to speak. Despite the industry’s widespread move to distance itself from Allen, Johansson remains one of a small handful of prominent figures, alongside actress Diane Keaton, who have maintained a vocal public defense of the embattled filmmaker.
