Orange County Chemical Crisis: Explosion Risk Over, Evacuations Remain

Garden Grove chemical leak update May 2026

Orange County fire officials confirmed on Monday, May 25, 2026, that the threat of a catastrophic “Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion” (BLEVE) at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove has been eliminated. The crisis, which began on May 21 when a 34,000-gallon tank containing 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA) began to overheat and off-gas, forced the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents across parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park, and Westminster. While the “worst-case scenario” has been averted, officials caution that the situation remains active and residents should not yet return to the affected areas.

The turning point in the days-long standoff occurred during an all-night operation between Sunday and Monday, when emergency crews confirmed that a structural crack had formed in the compromised tank. This crack allowed built-up pressure to release safely, causing the internal temperature of the chemical—which had climbed to over 100°F (38°C)—to stabilize and begin a steady decline toward 93°F (34°C). Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) Interim Chief TJ McGovern announced that the threat of a massive blast is “off the table,” marking a significant milestone in the mission to stabilize the site.

Despite the positive news regarding the explosion risk, emergency protocols remain firmly in place. While the evacuation zone has been slightly reduced, thousands of residents, including families in the Garden Grove Unified School District, remain under orders to stay away from their homes. Officials from the OCFA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are continuing to monitor the site for any potential chemical leakage, as the remaining material in the tank is still reactive and requires ongoing cooling.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s declaration of a state of emergency remains in effect, ensuring that FEMA assistance and federal resources are available to support local recovery and containment efforts. Authorities have requested that the public continue to monitor the official County of Orange incident website for real-time updates on when it might be safe to lift the remaining evacuation orders. As the situation stabilizes, investigators are expected to begin an examination of the facility to determine the cause of the tank’s failure once the site is fully secured.
