ISS Astronauts Return to Normal Operations Following Brief Evacuation Alert

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have returned to their planned operations after a brief precautionary evacuation alert on Friday, June 5, 2026. The alert was triggered by worsening air leaks in the PrK transfer tunnel, a component of the station’s Russian Zvezda service module. As a safety measure, NASA directed four crew members of the SpaceX Crew-12 mission and NASA astronaut Chris Williams to shelter within the docked Crew Dragon spacecraft and don their spacesuits in case an emergency departure became necessary.
The decision to initiate “safe haven” procedures was made “out of an abundance of caution” while the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, conducted more extensive repair efforts on the segment. According to reports, the leak had recently escalated, increasing from approximately one pound of air lost per day to two pounds. Cracks in the PrK module have been a persistent issue for the station for several years, and both NASA and Roscosmos have been working closely to monitor the structural integrity of the area and determine root causes.
After approximately two hours, NASA mission control instructed the crew to end the safe haven procedures and resume normal duties. This change in status followed an announcement from Roscosmos that they were pausing their immediate structural repair efforts to assess new data and measurements. NASA officials emphasized that they continue to coordinate with their Russian counterparts to develop a permanent, collaborative resolution to the long-standing leak concerns.
