India and China to Resume Direct Flights After Five-Year Freeze
India and China have agreed to restart direct flights later this month, ending a suspension that has lasted more than five years. The decision was announced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, following technical-level discussions between both countries.
The direct air services, which were halted in 2020 due to COVID-19 and tensions following a deadly border clash, are set to resume in late October 2025. One of the first routes back in operation will be the Kolkata-to-Guangzhou service by India’s major carrier, IndiGo, beginning October 26, with additional routes expected subject to regulatory approval.
In announcing the move, both governments described the resumption as part of a broader effort to ease diplomatic tensions, bolster trade, and enhance people-to-people connections. The decision also reflects attempts to normalize relations after years of standoff along the disputed India-China border.
Analysts say the return of direct flights could significantly reduce travel time and costs, improve tourism, business exchanges, and strengthen cultural ties. The revival of these routes is seen as a symbolic yet important step in repairing diplomatic relationships.
