Chief Judge James E. Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia denied a request by the Department of Justice to reinstate subpoenas targeting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday, April 3, 2026. This decision upholds a previous ruling from March 13 which originally quashed the grand jury subpoenas. The government sought records related to a $2.5 billion renovation project at the Federal Reserve headquarters, alleging that Powell had knowingly provided misleading testimony to Congress regarding the costs. However, Judge Boasberg reiterated that the government failed to provide any credible evidence of criminal misconduct. The judge characterized the legal effort as a transparent attempt to pressure the central bank chief into lowering interest rates or vacating his position. According to reporting from MS NOW, the ruling represents a significant setback for the Trump administration’s efforts to exert influence over the historically independent financial institution. The legal battle began in January 2026 when U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro issued the subpoenas as part of a criminal probe into the Fed's management of its historic Washington headquarters. Powell responded by releasing an unprecedented video message describing the investigation as a political smear campaign intended to undermine Fed independence. During the proceedings, the court noted a mountain of evidence suggesting that the subpoenas were served with an improper motive. Judge Boasberg wrote that the justifications provided by the Department of Justice were so thin and unsubstantiated that they appeared entirely pretextual. As noted by Al Jazeera, the ongoing investigation has already caused friction on Capitol Hill, with some senators blocking other Federal Reserve nominations until the probe is officially dropped. The denial of the motion to reconsider effectively halts the current investigation unless a higher court intervenes. Prosecutors had argued that new information justified the resurrection of the subpoenas, but the court found these arguments unconvincing. The tension between the executive branch and the Federal Reserve has driven market uncertainty throughout the first quarter of 2026. Critics of the administration argue that the use of grand jury subpoenas for political leverage sets a dangerous precedent for the separation of powers. As detailed by the Guardian, the ruling emphasizes that federal courts will not allow the judicial process to be used as a tool for administrative retaliation. The Department of Justice has expressed its intent to appeal the decision, while the Federal Reserve has declined to comment on the specific details of the ongoing litigation.
