Diddy Named in Tupac Trial Witness List as Prosecutors Call Murder an ‘Act of Revenge’
Sean “Diddy” Combs has been mentioned in the ongoing trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the man accused of orchestrating the 1996 murder of rap icon Tupac Shakur.
Prosecutors brought up Diddy’s name during opening statements as they presented their case against Davis, who is accused of arranging the fatal drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
The prosecution alleges that Tupac’s murder was an “act of revenge” following an earlier confrontation involving Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Prosecutors say Tupac and members of his entourage attacked Anderson at the MGM Grand after the Mike Tyson boxing match on September 7, 1996.
According to prosecutors, Davis did not fire the gun himself but allegedly organised the attack, supplied the weapon and directed the operation. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
Diddy’s connection to the case has been discussed for years because of the intense rivalry between the East Coast and West Coast hip-hop camps during the 1990s. His name appearing in the trial does not mean he has been charged with Tupac’s murder.
The trial’s witness list includes several prominent figures connected to the case, including former Death Row Records boss Marion “Suge” Knight, who was in the vehicle with Tupac when the shooting occurred. However, Knight has indicated that he does not intend to testify.
Prosecutors are relying heavily on statements Davis made over the years, including claims contained in his 2019 memoir. They argue that his own accounts help establish his role in planning the shooting. Davis’s defence, however, maintains that his previous statements were unreliable and argues that prosecutors have insufficient evidence against him.
The trial is expected to revisit many of the events surrounding Tupac’s death and the violent hip-hop rivalries of the 1990s. It could last several weeks as prosecutors and defence lawyers present witnesses and other evidence.
Davis remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
