Binance Guarantees User Funds After Record $6.3B Hack Linked to North Korea

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance pledged to fully cover customer losses following a massive $6.3 billion cyber security breach on October 29, marking the largest digital asset heist in history. Blockchain intelligence agencies, including TRM Labs and Chainalysis, alongside federal authorities, linked the attack to TraderTraitor—an elite cyber unit within North Korea’s state-sponsored Lazarus Group. The sophisticated breach drained $6.36 billion across ten major blockchain networks—including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron, and Solana—in roughly 20 minutes.

However, swift intervention by stablecoin issuers, security councils, and protocol operators successfully localized and froze approximately $2.7 billion to $3 billion of the compromised assets. Binance confirmed that deposits remained secure while temporary withdrawal holds were instituted to facilitate forensic safety audits. According to an official news report published by CBS News, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao and company leadership reiterated that all customer balances will be reimbursed using corporate reserves.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers accessed internal execution containers, potentially manipulating transaction approval workflows across hot wallets rather than exposing private keys directly. The attack vector mirrors tactics seen in previous state-sponsored incidents, such as the $1.5 billion Bybit exploit in early 2025, where hackers compromised internal developer credentials to bypass authentication protocols.

While the FBI and international law enforcement agencies continue working with private security firms to trace the remaining liquid tokens, market analysts note that fast action by industry partners significantly mitigated potential systemic financial damage across major digital asset markets.
