Eid-el-Maulud: Refuse to Be Divided by Politicians – CAN Tells Christians and Muslims
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Christians and Muslims across the country not to allow politicians to divide them along religious lines.
CAN made the call as Muslims prepare to mark Eid-el-Maulud, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The association urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote peace, unity and mutual understanding rather than allow political interests to create divisions between religious communities.
The Christian body warned that politicians may attempt to exploit religious differences for political advantage. It therefore encouraged both Christians and Muslims to remain focused on their shared responsibilities as Nigerians and reject attempts to turn religious identity into a tool for political mobilisation.
CAN stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence, particularly at a time when Nigeria continues to face security challenges, economic difficulties and political tensions.
The association also encouraged religious leaders and their followers to promote messages that strengthen national unity. It said religious differences should not prevent Nigerians from working together to address the problems affecting the country.
Eid-el-Maulud provides an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the teachings and example of Prophet Muhammad, including values such as compassion, justice, honesty and peaceful coexistence.
CAN’s message comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify, with concerns that religious and ethnic sentiments could become more prominent during political campaigns.
The association urged Nigerians to look beyond political and religious divisions and recognise their common interests as citizens.
CAN’s appeal reinforces the need for Christians and Muslims to reject violence, hatred and discrimination while promoting peaceful relationships across religious communities.
