Ukraine launched its most extensive drone assault on Moscow to date on Thursday, June 18, 2026, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Russian officials reported that nearly 200 drones were intercepted as they approached the capital, part of a broader overnight barrage involving over 500 drones across multiple regions.
Despite these defensive efforts, several drones successfully penetrated the city’s air defenses, striking the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district—the second time the facility has been hit in one week. The strikes sent massive plumes of black smoke over the city, caused fires at a major shopping complex, and damaged residential buildings, resulting in at least 17 reported injuries.
The impact of the attack extended beyond the physical damage, as authorities were forced to halt operations at all four of Moscow’s airports, leading to the cancellation of 170 flights by Aeroflot alone. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as a “fully justified” retaliation for recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, including an attack that damaged a historic monastery in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the goal of these long-range strikes is to bring the reality of the war to the Russian leadership and population, urging the Kremlin to seek a diplomatic end to the conflict. As the Russian Defense Ministry vowed “harsher blows” in response, the scale of the drone raid has prompted intense scrutiny of Russia’s air-defense capabilities in the face of Ukraine’s increasingly sophisticated, domestically produced drone technology.
