Russia Launches Massive Missile and Drone Assault on Kyiv
Russia heavy missile strike Kyiv
Russia launched a massive, combined-arms aerial assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, during the early hours of Sunday, May 24, 2026, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The attack, which began shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time, involved waves of suicide drones followed by a heavy barrage of ballistic missiles.
Explosions reverberated across the city throughout the night, with damage reported in every district of the capital, including the central Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, and Dniprovskyi areas. Officials confirmed that at least one person was killed and at least 24 others were injured during the onslaught.
The assault follows days of heightened tension after Russia vowed “inevitable and severe punishment” for a Ukrainian drone strike on a dormitory in the occupied Luhansk region, which Russian officials claimed killed 18 people.
Hours before the Kyiv bombardment, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issued urgent warnings, citing intelligence that Russia was preparing a combined strike that could potentially utilize the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile. While the Ukrainian Air Force tracked the threat of an Oreshnik launch during the attack, officials have not yet confirmed if the hypersonic weapon was deployed in this specific instance.
The scale of the destruction has been described as significant, with projectiles striking residential buildings, a school, office centers, warehouses, and a supermarket. Emergency services were deployed across the city to extinguish fires and rescue civilians trapped in damaged buildings, including an air raid shelter in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that damage was recorded in every district of the city, highlighting the widespread nature of the strikes. Governor Mykola Kalashnyk also confirmed additional damage and injuries in the surrounding Kyiv region, including the communities of Bucha and Brovary.
President Zelenskyy characterized the attack as a test of the international community’s resolve, stating that the use of advanced weaponry against civilian areas sets a dangerous global precedent. He urged allies to provide more than post-factum condemnation, calling for preventive pressure to stop the expansion of Russian aggression.
As the capital begins the process of recovery, the Ukrainian Air Force remains on high alert, anticipating that the current wave of hostilities could persist in the coming days. For live updates on this developing situation, monitor the latest reports from the Kyiv Independent and Reuters.
