Türkiye Signs Landmark Deal with UK to Purchase 20 Eurofighter Jets
Türkiye has officially signed a major defense agreement with the United Kingdom to acquire 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, marking a significant step in strengthening Ankara’s air defense capabilities. The deal, finalized after months of negotiations, reflects Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air fleet amid growing regional security challenges and tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to defense officials, the agreement includes not only the purchase of the aircraft but also provisions for maintenance, training, and technology transfer. The Eurofighter Typhoon, jointly developed by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain, is considered one of the world’s most advanced multirole combat aircraft, known for its speed, agility, and advanced radar systems.
Analysts say the deal could signal a deepening of defense ties between Ankara and London at a time when Türkiye is seeking to diversify its military partnerships beyond traditional allies. The move also comes as the Turkish Air Force continues to upgrade its capabilities following delays in the delivery of U.S. F-16 jets due to political disagreements.
The first batch of Eurofighters is expected to arrive in Türkiye within the next two years, with deliveries scheduled to be completed before 2030. Officials from both nations described the agreement as a “strategic milestone” that will enhance regional security and bilateral cooperation in defense technology.
