Jamaica Reports Three Deaths as Record-Breaking Hurricane Melissa Approaches
Jamaica has confirmed that three people have died ahead of the landfall of Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm that is expected to be the most powerful to hit the island in recorded history. Authorities reported the fatalities occurred as the storm’s outer bands caused rooftop falls, tree-cutting accidents, and electrocutions.
Meteorologists say Melissa has sustained winds of around 175 mph and is moving slowly toward Jamaica, raising concerns that the long duration of intense conditions could trigger widespread structural damage, life-threatening storm surges up to 13 feet, and as much as 40 inches of rainfall.
The government has issued mandatory evacuations for low-lying and flood-prone areas including the capital Kingston. Hospitals have already taken protective measures, relocating patients to higher floors and preparing for mass sheltering. Emergency services warned that infrastructure throughout the island may be overwhelmed once the eye of the hurricane passes.
