Trump to Meet Republican and Democratic Leaders as U.S Government Shutdown Looms
President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with top congressional leaders from both parties as the deadline to fund the federal government approaches. The meeting comes at a critical time, with the possibility of a partial government shutdown beginning Wednesday if no agreement is reached.
The gathering will include House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Trump previously canceled a meeting with Democrats but has reversed course amid growing pressure to address the impasse.
Lawmakers remain divided. Democrats insist any continuing resolution must include extensions of health insurance subsidies and reversals of Medicaid cuts. Republicans argue those issues should be handled separately and favor a “clean” short-term funding bill with no policy riders.
If the parties fail to strike a deal by the deadline, many federal employees may be furloughed or laid off, and a range of government services could be suspended until funding is restored.
