Trump Postpones Planned Meeting with Putin in Hungary Citing Need to Avoid a Wasted Meeting

US President Donald Trump has announced the postponement of a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, stating that he wants the encounter to be “productive, not a wasted meeting.” The scheduled summit was expected to focus on finding pathways toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, but Trump clarified that conditions were not yet suitable for meaningful progress.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized that both sides needed to come to the table ready for “real results” before any talks could take place. He noted that diplomatic efforts between Washington and Moscow are continuing at various levels, but confirmed that his personal meeting with Putin will be rescheduled “when the time is right.”

The planned meeting in Hungary, which was being coordinated with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government, had raised international attention as it would have marked one of the most direct dialogues between US and Russian leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. Observers say the postponement may signal ongoing disagreements about preconditions for negotiations or differing expectations for the scope of the talks.

While the White House has not provided a new date for the summit, insiders suggest it could take place later this year depending on developments on the battlefield and diplomatic channels.
