Republican Lawmakers Urge Treasury Department to Investigate CAIR Over Alleged Hamas Ties and Terrorism Concerns
Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Representative Elise Stefanik have formally called on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to initiate an investigation into the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), citing concerns over alleged financial links to Hamas and other questionable associations. In a joint letter, they argue that CAIR’s leadership history, statements following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, and prior legal findings point toward a pattern that may constitute material support for terrorism. The lawmakers highlighted that CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation trial, and that its founders were involved with the Islamic Association for Palestine, which they claim has been used as a propaganda front for Hamas.
Stefanik and Cotton are specifically asking the Treasury Department to scrutinize CAIR’s funding sources, evaluate whether any assets are being used to advance Hamas’ objectives, and examine whether CAIR’s rhetoric has aligned with narratives supportive of Hamas. They also raised questions about CAIR’s tax-exempt status and whether recent settlement of lawsuits has concealed donor information. CAIR has strongly denied the accusations, calling them unfounded and politically motivated, insisting it has no ties to Hamas and that its mission is to defend civil rights for American Muslims.
At stake in the request is whether CAIR’s activities violate U.S. sanctions on terrorist organizations and whether the organization’s operations comply with requirements for tax-exempt status. The Treasury Department has yet to respond to the request, and it remains unclear if this will lead to formal regulatory or legal action.
