Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed on Thursday that it will shut down Bluepoint Games next month. The decision to close the Austin-based studio follows a comprehensive business review conducted by PlayStation leadership. Approximately seventy employees will lose their jobs as the studio winds down its operations in March 2026. This shocking move comes less than five years after Sony officially acquired the developer in September 2021. Bluepoint has been a vital partner for the PlayStation brand for two decades and was celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. The announcement follows a period of significant industry shifts and structural changes within Sony’s global studio network.
The closure is reportedly tied to the cancellation of several high-profile projects over the last year. Bluepoint had been developing a live-service title set in the God of War universe before that project was scrapped in January 2025. Since that cancellation, the team had been pitching new original concepts to PlayStation Studios leadership. None of these internal pitches were accepted during the recent fiscal evaluations. Sony executives cited rising development costs and a challenging economic environment as primary factors for the studio’s termination. This news arrives amid a heavy week for international headlines, including the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the ongoing recovery efforts in California.
Bluepoint Games earned a reputation as the gold standard for video game remakes and remasters. The studio was widely praised for its work on the PlayStation 5 launch title Demon’s Souls and the 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus. They also provided critical development support for major hits like God of War Ragnarök and the Uncharted collection. Many fans had hoped the team would eventually lead a highly requested remake of Bloodborne or other classic franchises. This studio closure marks the fourth major shutdown for PlayStation since 2024, joining the ranks of London Studio and Firewalk Studios. The gaming community continues to react to these industry changes alongside other major media updates such as the casting of Kristen Bell in Sonic 4.
