A Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta has sentenced three men arrested during a recent Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raid at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Ogun State. The convictions mark one of the first outcomes from the high-profile operation that targeted internet fraud suspects.
Justice Dipeolu found Isaac Akinwale guilty of impersonation and online fraud. He was sentenced to three months in prison or a fine of ₦1 million after posing as a woman to defraud a victim of about $500. Ibrahim Azeez Olatunji received one month in prison or a ₦500,000 fine for running a romance scam. Habeeb Oladipupo Oshundairo was ordered to perform 30 days of community service, including carrying a banner that reads “Cybercrime Does Not Pay. Stay Away from Cybercrime,” after being convicted of impersonation and possession of ₦600,000 traced to fraudulent activities.
A fourth defendant, Onunoye Fawas Olamilekan, pleaded not guilty to impersonating an online persona known as “Nurse Becky” and retaining $50 from fraud proceeds. He has been remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending trial on October 31, 2025.
The EFCC raid, carried out last week, followed intelligence reports that a group of suspected fraudsters were holding a pool party to celebrate illicit gains. A total of 93 suspects were apprehended, with 23 initially scheduled for arraignment. The commission clarified that the OOPL itself was not a target, but rather the hotel facility within its grounds where the suspects were found.
