Melania Documentary Scores Best Debut for a Documentary

Melania Trump documentary box office $7 million debut 2026

The Amazon MGM Studios documentary Melania achieved a significant milestone during its opening weekend, grossing an estimated $7.04 million at the domestic box office as of Sunday, February 1, 2026. This figure marks the strongest opening for a non-concert documentary in over a decade, surpassing the previous ten-year record of $5 million set by the 2023 faith-based film After Death. Originally projected to earn between $2 million and $5 million, the film defied industry expectations by drawing large crowds, particularly in conservative-leaning regions. Directed by Brett Ratner, who returned to filmmaking for the first time since 2017, the documentary chronicles the 20 days in the life of First Lady Melania Trump leading up to the second inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The film’s commercial performance has highlighted a sharp divide between professional critics and the ticket-buying public. Despite receiving a dismal 11% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers labeling the project as “stage-managed” and “propaganda,” audiences responded with an enthusiastic “A” CinemaScore. Data from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the film’s success was driven primarily by older conservatives, with women over the age of 55 making up 72% of the opening-day audience. Geographically, ticket sales were strongest in Florida, Texas, and Arizona, as well as rural areas which accounted for nearly half of the total weekend draw. President Donald Trump, who hosted a star-studded premiere for the film at the Trump Kennedy Center earlier in the week, praised the results on social media, calling the documentary a “must watch” for his supporters.

While the $7 million debut is a triumph by documentary standards, the film faces a difficult path toward profitability. Amazon MGM Studios reportedly paid a record-breaking $40 million for the rights to the project and invested an additional $35 million in a massive global marketing campaign. This combined $75 million price tag makes Melania the most expensive documentary ever made. Analysts noted that the theatrical release was a contractual requirement by the studio and that the film’s ultimate success will likely be measured by its performance on Prime Video, where it is scheduled to begin streaming in late February. The documentary finished third at the weekend box office, trailing behind the survival thriller Send Help ($20 million) and the micro-budget sci-fi horror hit Iron Lung ($17.9 million).+2

The production of the documentary was not without controversy, as reports indicated that two-thirds of the crew requested to have their names removed from the final credits. According to The Guardian, some crew members cited discomfort with the working environment and the film’s promotional tone. Nevertheless, the documentary offers rare, intimate footage of Mrs. Trump, including scenes of her working on the family’s private living quarters at the White House and meetings with world figures such as Brigitte Macron. As the “Road to 2028” begins to take shape in political circles, the cultural impact of Melania serves as a clear indicator of the enduring engagement of the Trump brand with a significant segment of the American public.
