The Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat corruption and enhance transparency within Nigeria’s mining sector.
The agreement, announced in Abuja, aims to strengthen oversight in mineral licensing, revenue collection, and sector regulation. According to officials, the collaboration will help close loopholes that have historically enabled illegal practices and revenue losses in the extractive industry.
MCO Director-General, Obadiah Nkom, explained that the partnership reflects the government’s determination to ensure accountability in the mining sector, which is seen as a key driver for Nigeria’s economic diversification. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, stressed that tackling corruption in mining is vital to attract foreign investment and secure sustainable development.
Analysts believe this move will not only enhance investor confidence but also promote good governance in a sector long plagued by irregularities and illegal activities. Both agencies pledged to share intelligence, improve monitoring mechanisms, and enforce compliance with mining regulations.
