Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Officially Withdraws from Race

Graham Platner withdraws Maine Senate race

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner officially withdrew his candidacy on Friday, July 10, 2026, by filing the required paperwork with the Maine Secretary of State’s office. This formal action ends a campaign that had been engulfed in controversy following public allegations of sexual assault.

Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, had initially suspended his campaign operations on Wednesday following intense pressure from national and state Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, to exit the race. While Platner has consistently denied the allegations—which were brought to light by Politico and involved an account from a former girlfriend regarding a 2021 incident—he stated that he was stepping aside to allow the political movement he helped build to continue.

The accusations triggered a rapid exodus of support, with high-profile figures such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ruben Gallego rescinding their endorsements, rendering the campaign politically unviable.

With Platner’s formal withdrawal filed before the state’s deadline, the Maine Democratic Party is now tasked with selecting a replacement nominee to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election. Party officials have until July 27, 2026, to finalize a replacement candidate, with several contenders—including Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and former State Senate President Troy Jackson—reported to be interested in the nomination.
