Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner Faces Withdrawal Calls Following Sexual Assault Allegations

Graham Platner sexual assault allegation

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing mounting pressure to withdraw his candidacy for the 2026 Maine election after a former romantic partner publicly accused him of sexual assault. The allegations, which were reported by Politico, involve an incident from late 2021 in which the accuser, Jenny Racicot, claims that Platner entered her home while intoxicated and forced her to have non-consensual sex despite her repeated objections. Following the report, the Maine Democratic Party joined a growing chorus of political figures calling for Platner to end his campaign. Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer who is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, has categorically denied the accusations, labeling them as false and serious.

The fallout from the allegations was immediate, leading several high-profile Democratic supporters to rescind their endorsements of the candidate. Representative Ro Khanna of California, one of Platner’s earliest backers, stated that sexual assault constitutes a firm red line and declared that the allegations were sufficiently credible to warrant his withdrawal from the race. Similarly, Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona withdrew his support, describing the situation as deeply concerning. In response to the growing political firestorm, Platner announced he would take a temporary break from his campaign trail to reflect on the best path forward for his candidacy.

Under Maine state law, Platner faces a strict deadline to remove his name from the ballot. He must decide whether to continue his campaign or withdraw by July 13, 2026. If he chooses to withdraw, the Maine Democratic Party would then have a two-week window to select a replacement candidate for the general election. While Platner has previously faced and navigated various controversies throughout his political run, including past reports of toxic behavior in relationships, this latest accusation has significantly altered his standing within the party. The campaign has not yet provided a final decision on his future, leaving both Democratic officials and the public awaiting further word as the legal and political deadline approaches.
