Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver Exit Grey’s Anatomy After Season 22
Kevin McKidd Kim Raver leaving Grey’s Anatomy
Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, two of the longest-serving cast members on the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, officially concluded their tenures as series regulars during the Season 22 finale on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The departure of the actors, who portray Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman, respectively, marks the end of a nearly 20-year era for the franchise.
Showrunner Meg Marinis recently revealed that the decision to write off the fan-favorite couple was driven by a combination of creative narrative completion and significant industry-wide budget cuts. Marinis noted that while the decision was emotionally taxing for the production team, it became clear shortly after the New Year that the show needed to adjust its ensemble roster to stabilize per-episode costs for the upcoming Season 23.
The finale, titled “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” provided a definitive “happy ending” for Owen and Teddy rather than a tragic exit. After years of on-and-off relationship struggles and surviving numerous hospital crises, the couple decided to relocate together to pursue a new professional chapter away from Seattle.
Creator Shonda Rhimes expressed her gratitude for the duo in a public statement, highlighting that watching their love story evolve has been a privilege for the writers. By choosing to move the characters to a new city instead of killing them off, the show has intentionally left the door open for future guest appearances. This creative choice was a priority for Marinis, who explicitly rejected pitches for a fatal ending, citing her deep personal connection to the characters.
Both McKidd and Raver have been influential figures both in front of and behind the camera at Grey Sloan Memorial. McKidd joined the cast in Season 5 and eventually became a prolific director for the series, helming 48 episodes including his own farewell finale. Raver, who first appeared in Season 6 and later returned as a regular in Season 15, also expanded her role by directing several episodes in recent years.
In their respective farewell messages, both actors expressed immense gratitude to the viewers and the production team for the “magic” of the set. As ABC prepares for a new season without two of its central pillars, fans are left to reflect on the indelible mark Owen and Teddy have left on the medical drama’s history.
