Inibehe Effiong Defends Jude Okoye Amid Family Dispute
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has defended music executive Jude Okoye, stating that his former client has not been convicted of any criminal offence and should not be subjected to what he described as a “social media trial.” The lawyer’s remarks come amid the ongoing public dispute between Jude Okoye and his younger brother, Peter Okoye, formerly of the defunct music duo P-Square.
Effiong argued that while criminal allegations may be investigated by the appropriate authorities, it is wrong to portray an accused person as guilty before the courts have reached a verdict. He stressed that the principle of the presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of the Nigerian legal system and applies to every citizen regardless of public opinion or media attention.
The lawyer criticized Peter Okoye for making statements about the dispute on social media, warning that public commentary on matters that are before investigators or the courts could influence public perception without establishing legal responsibility. According to Effiong, allegations should be determined through due process rather than through online debates or public campaigns.

He noted that investigative agencies are responsible for gathering evidence and, where appropriate, presenting a case before the courts, where both the prosecution and the defence have the opportunity to present their arguments.
