Hulu Scraps Buffy Sequel Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot canceled Hulu 2026
Hulu has officially pulled the plug on its highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation series, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, just as the project was nearing a potential 2026 premiere. Original series lead Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to both star in and executive produce the revival, confirmed the disappointing news in a video message shared with fans on Saturday morning, March 14. Gellar expressed her sadness over the decision while taking the opportunity to thank Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao for her creative vision, noting that Zhao had reminded her why the character of Buffy Summers remains so significant to audiences worldwide. Despite the cancellation, Gellar ended her announcement with a nostalgic nod to the show’s lore, promising her followers that “if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”The project, which had been in development for over a year, was envisioned as a “legacy sequel” rather than a traditional reboot, picking up 25 years after the events of the 1997–2003 series. The storyline was intended to follow an older Buffy Summers as she mentored a new generation of slayers, led by Skeleton Crew actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the role of a sixteen-year-old bookworm named Nova. According to official reports from the industry, the pilot episode was filmed last August under Zhao’s direction, with a script penned by Poker Face writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. However, sources close to the production indicated that the pilot was deemed “not perfect” by network executives, and while a total rework was briefly considered, Hulu ultimately opted to scrap the incarnation entirely.
While the current version of the “Buffyverse” expansion is dead at Hulu, the streaming service reportedly remains high on the intellectual property and may look to regroup for a different take on the franchise in the future. The original series, created by Joss Whedon, has seen a significant resurgence in popularity in recent years, though Whedon himself was not involved in the revival following numerous allegations regarding his conduct on previous sets. Industry analysts have suggested that the mismatch between Zhao’s arthouse cinematic sensibility and the show’s traditional teen-drama roots may have contributed to the creative impasse. For now, the 144 episodes of the original series remain available for streaming on Hulu as fans process the loss of what would have been the first on-screen return to Sunnydale in over two decades.
