Germany Commits €49 Million to ECOWAS for Security and Regional Development
Germany has pledged €49 million in new funding to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support security, stability, and sustainable development initiatives across West Africa. The commitment was announced following high-level discussions between German officials and ECOWAS leaders in Abuja, aimed at strengthening cooperation on peacekeeping, governance, and regional integration.
According to the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the funds will be directed toward key areas such as conflict prevention, counterterrorism, democratic governance, and infrastructure development within ECOWAS member states. Berlin emphasized that the pledge reflects its continued support for Africa-led solutions to regional security challenges, especially in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea regions.
ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Touray commended Germany’s long-standing partnership and noted that the financial commitment would enhance the bloc’s capacity to manage regional crises and promote sustainable growth. He added that the funds will also help strengthen institutional frameworks for peacebuilding, trade facilitation, and youth empowerment.
Germany has been one of ECOWAS’s most consistent international partners, providing technical and financial assistance over the past decade in areas including election monitoring, humanitarian relief, and regional integration programs. The latest contribution underscores Germany’s strategic intent to deepen its engagement with West Africa amid growing global interest in the region’s security and economic prospects.
