FIFA Slashes Prices with New £45 Ticket Tier Following 2026 World Cup Backlash
In a significant climbdown following a global outcry from supporters, FIFA has officially announced the introduction of a new, “more affordable” ticket category for the 2026 World Cup. The governing body confirmed on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, that a dedicated “Supporter Entry Tier” will offer tickets at a fixed price of $60 (£45) for every single one of the tournament’s 104 matches, including the high-stakes final at MetLife Stadium.
The announcement comes just days after fan groups, including Football Supporters Europe (FSE) and the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), blasted FIFA for “extortionate” and “scandalous” pricing. Prior to this change, the cheapest tickets for the 2026 final were priced at over £3,000, with some group-stage seats starting as high as £200. Analysts estimated that a loyal fan following their team from the opening match to the final would have faced a minimum bill of over £5,000.
How the £45 Tier Works
While the fixed price is a victory for fans, the availability of these tickets remains limited and highly targeted:
- Eligibility: These tickets are reserved exclusively for “loyal fans” of the participating national teams (such as England or Scotland) who have qualified for the tournament.
- Allocation: The £45 tickets will make up 10% of the total allocation given to each Participating Member Association (PMA). For a major stadium, this equates to roughly 400 to 750 tickets per team, per match.
- Distribution: Each national football association will manage its own distribution process and set its own “loyalty criteria” to ensure the tickets go to dedicated supporters rather than corporate entities or resellers.
Broadening the “Value” Range
FIFA also clarified that it is restructuring the “Supporter” portion of tickets to be more accessible. Now, 50% of the tickets allocated to each national team will fall into their more affordable categories:
- 10% at the Supporter Entry Tier ($60 / £45)
- 40% at the Supporter Value Tier (prices vary, but lower than standard seats)
The remaining 50% of the team’s allocation will be split between “Standard” and “Premier” tiers. In an additional concession, FIFA announced it will waive administrative fees on refunds for fans who apply for knockout round tickets but find their team has been eliminated early.
Despite the move, groups like the FSE remain skeptical, calling the announcement an “appeasement tactic” and noting that the vast majority of fans will still be forced to pay significantly more than at any previous World Cup. Nevertheless, for the lucky few hundred fans of each nation, the dream of a £45 World Cup Final ticket is now a reality.
