President Trump Receives Inaugural FIFA Peace Prize Following Recent Nobel Snub
President Donald Trump became the inaugural recipient of the newly created FIFA Peace Prize at the official draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held in Washington, D.C., on Friday. The award, which has been cited by analysts as a gesture to compensate a leader who had publicly sought and then missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize last month, was presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a close ally of the U.S. President.
The new FIFA prize is officially named the “FIFA Peace Prize: Football Unites the World” and was announced in November, shortly after the Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. During the presentation at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Mr. Infantino praised President Trump for his “exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world.” He added, “This is what we want from a leader—a leader that cares about the people.”
President Trump, who wore the gold medal around his neck and was presented with a trophy, accepted the award, calling it “truly one of the great honors of my life.” In his remarks, he touted his administration’s efforts to broker ceasefires in conflict zones and claimed that “the world is a safer place now.” The decision to create and award the inaugural honor to the President has drawn criticism from political observers and human rights groups who point out the lack of transparency surrounding the award’s criteria and selection process. Despite the backlash, the event successfully placed the President at the center of the global football spectacle as the U.S. prepares to co-host the largest-ever World Cup tournament.
