Federal agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at the district office of Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas in Portsmouth on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed the activity was part of an ongoing investigation, with sources familiar with the matter describing it as a major corruption probe.
In addition to her legislative office, agents were seen searching “The Cannabis Outlet,” a dispensary co-owned by Lucas located nearby. Lucas, who has served in the General Assembly for over three decades and currently serves as the Senate president pro tempore, told reporters at the scene that she had no information regarding the specific nature of the federal inquiry.
The timing of the search has drawn intense scrutiny from Virginia political leaders, coming just weeks after Lucas helped spearhead a controversial mid-decade redistricting push. Lucas was a central figure in passing a constitutional amendment that authorized a new Democratic-backed congressional map, which voters approved in an April referendum.
The new map, which could shift up to four U.S. House seats to the Democratic column, is currently on hold as the Virginia Supreme Court reviews its legality following lower court rulings that the General Assembly violated procedural requirements during its passage.
Democratic leaders, including Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, expressed deep concern over the raid, citing the “politicization” of the current federal administration. While the FBI has not released details on the evidence sought, some officials pointed to the cannabis shop’s history of scrutiny regarding product labeling and state retail laws.
Governor Abigail Spanberger’s office confirmed it is aware of the situation but declined further comment pending more information. As of Wednesday evening, no charges have been filed against Lucas, and the FBI maintained that there is no threat to public safety.
