EEDC Staff Dies After Electrocution During Maintenance Duty in Enugu
An operations staff member of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has died after suffering an electric shock while carrying out maintenance work at a distribution substation in Eke, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The deceased was identified as Mr Samson Okechi, a Team Lead attached to the company’s 9th Mile District. The incident occurred at about 1pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at a 50kVA/11kV pole-mounted distribution substation in Eke.
According to the company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, Okechi was carrying out maintenance work at the substation when he sustained the fatal electric shock.
He was immediately evacuated to Our Saviour Hospital in Ngwo for medical attention. However, the doctor on duty reportedly pronounced him dead. His remains were subsequently deposited at a mortuary.
The incident was also reported at the Ngwo Police Station for documentation and other statutory procedures.
The company has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that Okechi was murdered or that his death was connected to sabotage. Management described those claims as unfounded and urged members of the public to disregard them.
Ezeh explained that Okechi had earlier requested a Station Guarantee (SG) for the Okwe 11kV Feeder. The request was reportedly granted at about 11:06am at the 9th Mile Injection Substation, after which the feeder was opened and tagged before the maintenance operation.
MEDL has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The company said the investigation would examine the immediate, underlying and root causes of the accident.
The findings are expected to help identify any safety gaps and determine appropriate corrective measures to strengthen the company’s safety procedures and operational controls.
The company expressed condolences to Okechi’s family and colleagues, describing his death as a painful loss.
The incident comes months after another MEDL worker, Isaac Dike, reportedly died in an electrocution incident in Enugu while carrying out work at a distribution substation.
