Apple Unveils iPhone Duo as First Foldable Smartphone
Apple officially entered the foldable smartphone market on Wednesday, unveiling the all-new iPhone Duo during its “Surprise and Shine” keynote event at Apple Park in Cupertino. The unveiling represents the most dramatic hardware redesign for the company’s flagship line since the original iPhone debuted, while also marking the first major product showcase presided over by newly appointed Apple Chief Executive Officer John Ternus.
Featuring a passport-style folding form factor, the iPhone Duo folds completely flat to reveal a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display. When closed, users can access an outer 5.4-inch screen designed for single-handed navigation. Constructed from grade 5 titanium with Ceramic Shield 2 protective glass, the chassis utilizes an innovative hinge mechanism engineered with over 100 precision components and carbon fiber support plates.
The device is driven by Apple’s latest A20 Pro silicon, which features an upgraded display engine and custom vapor chamber cooling designed to handle dual-screen multitasking and complex on-device artificial intelligence workloads.
The camera hardware includes a 48MP main Fusion sensor paired with a 48MP ultra-wide lens, along with specialized software modes like Duo Preview that allow subjects to view framing on the outer display while a photo is taken.
To accommodate the ultra-thin folding profile, Apple integrated Touch ID into the side power button rather than Face ID. According to official release details published by Apple, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. Pre-orders begin on October 16, with full retail availability starting October 23.
