Folarin Balogun Everton Transfer Collapses on Deadline Day
A proposed €50 million transfer taking United States men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun from AS Monaco to Everton sensationally collapsed on transfer deadline day after the 25-year-old forward opted against finalizing the move.
Everton had initially reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 outfit on a fee of €45 million plus €5 million in performance-based add-ons, structured to make Balogun one of the most expensive American transfers in football history. However, the deal ran into significant complications during medical examinations at Finch Farm, prompting a last-minute renegotiation between the two clubs.
Following the medical review, Everton and Monaco successfully restructured the economic terms of the agreement and submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League to grant extra time for finalization. Despite both clubs reaching a new understanding to rescue the deal, Balogun personally decided not to sign the contract and left Everton’s training ground without completing the transfer.
Reports indicate that the renegotiated terms offered by Everton following the physical assessment played a key role in the player’s change of heart, leaving the Toffees without their primary attacking target heading into the autumn campaign.
The sudden collapse leaves both clubs facing roster challenges for the first half of the season. Everton missed out on acquiring a premier forward following the exit of Beto to Fiorentina, while Monaco lost out on a major financial windfall that had been linked to their own incoming transfer strategy.
Balogun, who enjoyed an impactful campaign for the USMNT during the 2026 FIFA World Cup with three goals in four appearances, will now remain with Monaco through at least the January transfer window as he works his way back into full match fitness.
