3 Dead, 3 Officers Wounded in Downtown Minneapolis Shooting

A chaotic shooting at a high-rise apartment complex near Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis left three people dead—including the suspected gunman—and six others injured, including three police officers. The violent incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when Minneapolis police officers responded to 911 reports of gunfire at the Loring Towers complex on East Grant Street. Upon entering the building, responding officers discovered multiple victims before hearing a rapid succession of additional gunshots from an upper floor. According to an official news report published by CBS News, officers ascended the building toward the sound of the gunfire, encountering a heavy smoke-like haze that severely obscured their vision before confronting the threat on the eighth floor.

The resulting exchange of gunfire left one civilian victim dead at the scene, while a second victim passed away shortly after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Three Minneapolis police officers sustained injuries during the active tactical response; two officers suffered direct gunshot wounds—including leg and abdominal injuries—while a third officer was treated for non-life-threatening trauma. Hospital officials confirmed that all three officers remain in stable condition. The suspected gunman was also found dead on the eighth floor, though police spokesperson Sgt. Garrett Parten noted that authorities are still investigating whether the shooter died from law enforcement gunfire or a self-inflicted wound. Four additional civilians suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical evaluation.

Residents inside the apartment tower described chaotic scenes as armed officers deployed long rifles and established perimeter positions along East Grant Street. Several tenants told reporters that they had previously voiced safety concerns to building management regarding a male resident who frequently displayed handguns in hallways. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued a statement expressing gratitude for the rapid law enforcement response and asking residents to keep the first responders in their prayers. The FBI, along with state public safety officials, joined local law enforcement to assist in processing the active crime scene, reviewing security footage, and determining the primary motive behind the mass casualty event.
