Graham Platner Withdraws from Maine Senate Race
Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner officially suspended his campaign on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, following a series of serious sexual assault allegations. The decision came after an intense period of pressure from national Democratic leadership, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who demanded his withdrawal.
Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer who had run an insurgent campaign against the Democratic establishment, vehemently denied the allegations in an eleven-minute video message. Despite maintaining his innocence, Platner stated, “For the movement to continue, it can’t be me,” and announced the suspension of his campaign operations.
The allegations, which were recently brought to light by Politico, involved an account from a former girlfriend regarding an incident in 2021. Following the report, high-profile supporters including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ruben Gallego rescinded their endorsements, making the campaign unviable.
Under Maine election law, the Democratic Party now has until July 27, 2026, to select a replacement candidate to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election. Party officials have expressed confidence that they can harness the energy of Platner’s former supporters to unify behind a new nominee.
