Fatal Shipyard Explosion on Staten Island
Staten Island shipyard explosion investigation 2026
A violent series of explosions and a major fire at a commercial shipyard on Staten Island’s Richmond Terrace resulted in one fatality and dozens of injuries on Friday, May 22, 2026. The incident, which unfolded in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood, began around 3:30 p.m. when emergency crews responded to reports of a fire in the basement of a metal structure at the rear of the shipping docks and accounts of two workers trapped inside.
As over 200 firefighters and EMS personnel from 68 units worked to combat the blaze, a powerful secondary explosion tore through the site, causing significant injuries to first responders who were conducting search-and-rescue operations inside, on top of, and adjacent to the structure. Officials confirmed that one civilian was pronounced dead at the scene. Among the injured were at least 34 members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).
Two members of the department—a fire marshal and a firefighter—sustained the most serious injuries. The fire marshal, who suffered significant head trauma including a skull fracture and a brain bleed, remains in critical but stable condition. Medical officials noted that both individuals were struck by a “shock wave” or energy blast while operating in the confined space of the basement, a situation FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito described as an “exceptionally dangerous” operation.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who briefed the public alongside fire officials Friday evening, confirmed that the fire was brought under control by approximately 7:20 p.m. While the immediate emergency response successfully accounted for all fire personnel, the exact cause of the blaze and the subsequent explosions remains under active investigation. State and local agencies are currently coordinating to analyze the site, which was historically part of the Bethlehem Steel complex.
The community and local leaders have expressed support for the injured first responders, with New York Attorney General Letitia James and Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella issuing statements calling for prayers for the victims and their families. As of Saturday morning, investigators are continuing to sift through the wreckage on Richmond Terrace to determine the origin of the disaster.
