Rob Base, “It Takes Two” Rapper, Dies at 59
Rob Base death news 2026
Hip-hop pioneer Robert Ginyard, globally known as Rob Base, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the age of 59. His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement shared on the rapper’s official social media accounts, noting that he died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones following a private battle with cancer. His passing came just four days after he celebrated his 59th birthday on May 18.
Born in Harlem, New York, in 1967, Ginyard rose to international fame during the golden era of hip-hop as one-half of the influential duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock. The pair achieved massive mainstream success with their 1988 platinum-certified hit “It Takes Two,” a track that remains a staple of party playlists, sporting events, and film soundtracks globally. Beyond their signature song, the duo produced several other enduring tracks, including “Joy and Pain” and “Get on the Dance Floor.”
Throughout his decades-long career, Rob Base was celebrated for his high-energy performances and his role in bridging the gap between underground hip-hop and mainstream pop culture. Following the death of his musical partner Rodney “Skip” Bryce—better known as DJ E-Z Rock—in 2014, Base continued to honor their legacy by performing their classics as a solo act, most recently appearing on the popular “I Love the ’90s Tour.” In his later years, he dedicated much of his time to mentoring emerging artists through his production company, Funky Base, Inc.
The music community has responded to the news with an outpouring of tributes from fellow artists and collaborators. Figures including Kid Capri, Fat Joe, and DJ Jazzy Jeff expressed their shock and condolences, reflecting on his professional integrity and lasting impact on the genre. Ginyard is survived by his children, including his daughter De’Jené and son Robert Jr. His legacy as a foundational figure in hip-hop history remains secure, as his music continues to resonate with generations of fans worldwide.
