Ed Sheeran Breaks Silence on Stage After Macklemore Tour Dropping
Ed Sheeran broke his silence on stage on Saturday night during his concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, addressing the high-profile controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his tour. The performance marked Sheeran’s first show since tour promoter Messina Touring Group dropped Macklemore following pressure from venue ownersβled by New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraftβover the rapper’s pro-Palestinian comments at MetLife Stadium.
Taking the stage alone after remaining opening acts FINNEAS, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and backing band Beoga withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore, Sheeran delivered an emotionally charged opening address directly to the audience. According to an official news report published by Consequence, Sheeran acknowledged making mistakes, apologized to fans, and expressed deep concern over stadium executives attempting to pre-approve content performed on stage.
In his introductory remarks, the British singer-songwriter addressed criticism over his long-standing preference to remain apolitical, framing the crisis in the Middle East as an urgent humanitarian issue rather than a political debate. Sheeran explicitly condemned the violence, stating that while the October 7 attacks at the Nova music festival were horrific, what is happening in Gaza is “catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate.”
Emphasizing that he could no longer stay silent about civilian casualties and children losing their lives, Sheeran announced that he and Kraft had each committed $2 million toward humanitarian relief efforts for victims in the region. He cautioned that venue-level censorship threatens artistic expression across the free world, reiterating that his concerts must remain inclusive spaces where people holding opposing political viewpoints can peacefully coexist.
The controversy began earlier this month when Macklemore delivered a speech during his opening set in New Jersey, chanting “Free Palestine” and dedicating his performance to the people of Gaza and the West Bank. The incident generated intense backlash from organizations like the Israeli-American Council and triggered stadium operators across multiple cities to warn they would cancel upcoming tour dates if Macklemore remained on the bill.
While Macklemore released a statement revealing that Sheeran’s team ultimately made the call to drop him following an ultimatum from Kraft and other venue owners, Sheeran clarified via social media that the decision was driven by the promoter and stadium contracts rather than his personal choice. Despite pro-Palestinian demonstrations outside the Philadelphia venue on Saturday, Sheeran completed the solo performance without further disruption, maintaining that music should ultimately foster unity amid global division.
